Dr. M. Anthony Pogrel is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, specializing in head and neck pathologies, temporomandibular joint surgery, orthognathic surgery and the use of lasers in surgery. In addition to treating patients at UCSF Medical Center, he conducts research on new treatments for oral and maxillofacial conditions including problems with facial nerves and salivary gland tumors.
Pogrel earned a dental degree at Liverpool University in England and a medical degree at Aberdeen University in Scotland. He completed general surgery training in Great Britain and oral and maxillofacial surgery training in Great Britain, Holland and Miami, Fla. Pogrel joined the University of California, San Francisco in 1983, where he is a professor and chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with a joint appointment in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is licensed in dentistry and medicine in California and is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the American College of Surgeons, and is certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
